Fox Valley residents may not have to get used to a new number for U.S. 41 when it becomes part of the Interstate Highway System.

The state Department of Transportation said Wednesday it requested “41” as the interstate designation number for the 142-mile stretch of highway between Milwaukee and Green Bay. The request was submitted to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and the Federal Highway Administration, which must approve the name.

State officials expect to announce the highway’s new name by mid-November.

“The number 41 is the one we forwarded,” Kim Rudat, a state Department of Transportation spokesman said Wednesday.

Other numbers under consideration included 55 and 57, two existing interstate highways that run through Illinois but Rudat said neither of those numbers were recommended.

It’s fairly obvious that all Interstate Highways that run north and south are numbered with odd numbers. Smaller numbers to the west, higher numbers to the east. We have Interste 39 over in Wausau and Interstate 43 along lake Michigan in Wisconsin. It fairly obvious that HWY 41 will be named Interstate 41. If the feds name it 55 or 57, it would have plans to run the interstate from Upper Michigan to Alabama or Mississippi. Let’s not make a big deal out of this!
