MADISON — Shullsburg wants another shot at a casino.
Perhaps that’s fitting. Not many places have lived the gambler’s life — the ups and downs, the dream of hitting it big — like this former mining town tucked in the hills of southwest Wisconsin.
More than a decade after Shullsburg bet on an off-reservation casino, and lost, the little city of some 1,200 is trying its luck again with the Native American tribe that once brought the promise of hundreds of jobs, a booming tax base, and an entertainment destination to Lafayette County.
The updated proposal, rolled out this year, is scaled back a bit, but hope in the casino deal seems, at least among city leaders, alive and well.
By March of this year, the Lac du Flambeau tribe had authorized the submission of a new Shullsburg casino fee to trust application resolution, setting the procedural wheels in motion.
