County eyes park campsites, temporary shower and bathroom facilities for homeless
STEVEN VERBURG | Wisconsin State Journal | sverburg@madison.com | 608-252-6118Dane County Board members may designate three county park campsites for the homeless and set up temporary shower and restroom facilities around Madison, under proposals formalized this week. But County Executive Joe Parisi said Friday he’s wary of unstudied short-term measures because the best answers are prevention of homelessness and expansion of permanent housing opportunities.
“Our homeless population deserves better than to live in tents,” Parisi said.
Still, nearly a dozen County Board members have sponsored proposals calling for the county to pay reservation fees for the campsites at Lake Farm Park on Lake Waubesa, lift a 14-day limit for camping, establish at least one shower facility at an undetermined location, and set up portable restrooms at four county properties in Madison. County staff hadn’t yet estimated the proposals’ cost on Friday.
